Have you ever watched a surfer? He will take his board and enter the water and work his way out into the ocean to wait for a wave. Sometimes he will get pulled under when a wave comes and other times a wave doesn’t come, and he just sits on his board, waiting. But man-oh-man, when the wave comes, what a moment! The surfer is lifted up and he rides the wave and escapes into a moment I can only imagine.
Look around you. Who do you see who is being pulled under? Who do you see who is sitting, patiently waiting for a wave to give them a lift? Be the one to create a wave. Lift them up and carry them toward their goal. How do you create a wave? It’s easier than you might think:
- When you notice people doing something well, tell them! This is also a great way to find yourself surrounded by positive people.
- Work to make others greater than yourself. Do not be afraid to share what you know. It helps those around you and increases your own resources at the same time.
- Offer encouragement, especially if you know someone is working on a project or toward a goal.
- Hear something good about someone? Pass it on! Here’s a great phrase, “I’ve been hearing a lot of good things behind your back…” and then tell them what you’ve heard!
When was the last time you were upset because someone patted you on the back or told you, “Well done!” On-the-other-hand, when was the last time someone said something nice to you and it lifted you up, like a wave carrying a surfer to the shore? Go out of your way to create a wave for someone who’s struggling, or who is sitting patiently, waiting for some inspiration. Here’s the beauty of it: the wave you create will grab hold of you and pull you along with it. You create a wave that helps someone else and you benefit as well, what could be better?
